Queer YA Scrabble: Intro

Queer YA Scrabble

Queer YA Scrabble is taking place this weekend! Hurrah! Join us to celebrate LGBTQ-positive YA and you might just win lots of great books! Click here to find a list of all the prizes you can win! I am honoured to be one of the blogs helping to host this event, since you all know how passionate I am about LGBTQ YA. 😊

Starting tomorrow, I will be posting six posts, each featuring one of the six LGBTQ YA books below. Tomorrow there will be five posts, going up at 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm, and finally on Sunday morning at 9am the last post will go up. (I'm in the UK and we're on British Summer Time right now, check for other time zones here!)

I will be scattering some letters throughout the six posts which you will then need to collect and put together to form an anagram. Those letters will be made obvious because they will be coloured red and formatted bold: like this. Here's a hint: the anagram is LGBTQ-related! There are no letters hidden in this post.

I am only one of five blogs helping to host this event! Each blog is featuring a different set of books and authors, so please remember to visit the other blogs to solve more anagrams and win more giveaways!

There is also a CHARITY AUCTION running after the giveaway finishes! It will run for a week afterwards. The boxes for the auction are nearly the same as the giveaway except for a crucial difference: they will all contain 3 'wild-cards.' These wild-cards have been donated by agents and editors, and include: skip the query queue, query critiques, 10 page critiques, 20 page critiques and 140-char pitch critiques. Participating agents/editors are: Laura Zats, Marietta Zacker, Brent Taylor, Stephen Morgan, Patricia Nelson, Rachel Brooks, Peter Knapp, Saba Sulaman, Maria Vincente, Rebecca Podos. All of these agents/editors are actively seeking Queer YA fiction. (Find a list of all the wild-cards here.)

You'll be able to enter the charity auction on the official Queer YA Scrabble website!

Without further ado, here are the six books that I will be featuring on my blog! Edit: All six posts are now up, so you can solve the anagram and enter the giveaway. Clicking on the title of each book will take you directly to the post featuring that book where you can hunt for the hidden letters!

The Art of Being Normal

Two boys. Two secrets.

David Piper has always been an outsider. His parents think he’s gay. The school bully thinks he’s a freak. Only his two best friends know the real truth – David wants to be a girl.

On the first day at his new school Leo Denton has one goal – to be invisible. Attracting the attention of the most beautiful girl in year eleven is definitely not part of that plan.

When Leo stands up for David in a fight, an unlikely friendship forms. But things are about to get messy. Because at Eden Park School secrets have a funny habit of not staying secret for long…

Trust Me, I'm Trouble by Mary Elizabeth Summer
Goodreads | Amazon UK

Untitled-8The sequel to TRUST ME, I’M LYING

Staying out of trouble isn’t possible for Julep Dupree. She has managed not to get kicked out of her private school, even though everyone knows she’s responsible for taking down a human-trafficking mob boss—and getting St. Agatha’s golden-boy Tyler killed in the process. Running cons holds her guilty conscience at bay, but unfortunately, someone wants Julep to pay for her mistakes . . . with her life.

Against her better judgment, Julep takes a shady case that requires her to infiltrate a secretive organization that her long-gone mother and the enigmatic blue fairy may be connected to. Her best friend, Sam, isn’t around to stop her, and Dani, her one true confidante, happens to be a nineteen-year-old mob enforcer whose moral compass is as questionable as Julep’s. But there’s not much time to worry about right and wrong—or to save your falling heart—when there’s a contract on your head.

Murders, heists, secrets and lies, hit men and hidden identities . . . If Julep doesn’t watch her back, it’s her funeral. No lie.

Pitch by Will Parkinson
Goodreads | Amazon UK

PitchThe day Jackson Kern walks into Taylor Andrews’s classroom is a momentous day in Taylor's life. He's had crushes before, sure, but as time goes on, this is starting to look a whole lot more serious. Still, Jackson doesn’t return Taylor’s feelings.

Taylor has his own admirers, though. Kevin Richards is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants right now is Taylor, so when Taylor rejects him, Kevin retaliates. At first Taylor’s entourage rallies around him, but then Kevin takes his deception one step further and Taylor sees his support dwindle, teaching him the valuable lesson about who he can truly consider a friend.

Martyr by A. R. Kahler
Goodreads | Amazon UK

MartyrThree years have passed since magic destroyed the world.

Those who remain struggle to survive the monsters roaming the streets, fighting back with steel and magic—the very weapons that birthed the Howls in the first place.

Tenn is one such Hunter, a boy with the ability to harness the elements through ancient runes. For years, the Hunters have used this magic to keep the monsters at bay, but it's never been enough to truly win the war. Humans are losing.

When Tenn falls prey to an incubus named Tomás and his terrifying Kin, Tenn learns there's more to this than a fight for survival. He's a pawn in a bigger game, one with devastating consequences. If he doesn't play his part, it could cost him his life, his lover and his world.

The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley by Shaun David Hutchinson
Goodreads | Amazon UK

The Five Stages of Andrew BrawleyAndrew Brawley was supposed to die that night. His parents did, and so did his sister, but he survived.

Now he lives in the hospital. He serves food in the cafeteria, he hangs out with the nurses, and he sleeps in a forgotten supply closet. Drew blends in to near invisibility, hiding from his past, his guilt, and those who are trying to find him.

Then one night Rusty is wheeled into the ER, burned on half his body by hateful classmates. His agony calls out to Drew like a beacon, pulling them both together through all their pain and grief. In Rusty, Drew sees hope, happiness, and a future for both of them. A future outside the hospital, and away from their pasts.

But Drew knows that life is never that simple. Death roams the hospital, searching for Drew, and now Rusty. Drew lost his family, but he refuses to lose Rusty, too, so he’s determined to make things right. He’s determined to bargain, and to settle his debts once and for all.

But Death is not easily placated, and Drew’s life will have to get worse before there is any chance for things to get better.

A partly graphic novel.
